Police have seized seven e-scooters, a catapult and cannabis in a Kent town. As part of work to tackle antisocial behaviour, officers carried out high-visibility patrols in Ashford town centre, Stanhope, Beaver Green and Kennington areas on Friday, January 17.

Those acting suspiciously, or seen riding e-scooters, were stopped and spoken to about their behaviour. Officers seized seven e-scooters from different areas of the town, with riders issued with notices under Section 59 of the Police Reform Act, which allows police to seize vehicles causing an annoyance or alarm to others.

A catapult was seized following a stop and search of someone on foot, and a small amount of cannabis was taken from a person whose e-scooter was also seized. He was dealt with by way of a community resolution. Inspector Jason Bushell, of Ashford Community Safety Unit, said: "It is currently against the law to use e-scooters on public streets, pavements or cycle lanes.

"They are only permitted on private land, with the landowner's permission, and in parts of the country where the Government has permitted trials. Beat officers regularly stop and speak to people they see using e-scooters, seeking to educate them about the law surrounding their use.

"When people are seen riding e-scooters in an anti-social manner, we can issue Fixed Penalty Notices and seize and destroy the machines."
