Chef, broadcaster and campaigner Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall is famously committed to seasonal, ethically produced food, and to foraging locally in Devon.

Here, he points us towards the very best ingredients, produce and food talent to be found in his area (Charmouth at low tide is good for seaweed, especially dulse, sea lettuce and enteromorpha or gut weed, he says.)

Out for dinner

Hix Oyster and Fish House in Lyme Regis is always a treat. Spanking fresh seafood cooked with style and often some locally foraged wild ingredients too, plus a stunning view over the Cobb and out to sea.

Coffee and cake

The Town Mill Bakery in Rousdon makes amazing sourdough and delicious pastries. Toast in Honiton High Street (left) does great coffee and baking, as well as hearty breakfast and simple lunches.

The Rusty Pig
The Rusty Pig

With artisan charcuterie from the likes of Good Game and The Rusty Pig, we are spoiled with tremendous food talent. I rate Colyton Butchers which is just down the road from me – they make fantastic pies, and Porkies in Honiton make great sausages from their own orchard pigs.

Catch of the day

Good fishmongers are such a rarity these days so we’re spoilt to have three within striking distance: The Old Watch House in Lyme Regis, The Devon Fishmonger in Honiton and The Fish Shack at Millers Farm Shop, which sells excellent locally caught fish from Lyme Bay and Brixham.

We hang out in Axmouth Harbour at Seaton, as we have a small fishing boat there. I spend far too much money in the Seaton Tackle Shop – it has a tiny cafe with good chips and great crab sandwiches in the summer.

Ganesha Wholefoods
Ganesha Wholefoods

We do masses of our shopping in Ganesha Wholefoods in Honiton – all of our organic grains and pulses and flours and teas and coffee come from there, as well as staples like cooking oil and vinegar, and dried fruits and Montezuma chocolate which we eat far too much of. It’s like a tardis.
