Kim Cattrall has opened up about her role as Samantha Jones in Sex and the City, talking about her decision not to sign on to a third film and the fact that she turned down playing high-flying, sexually open Samantha three times before accepting the role back in the '90s.

"I think I was scared," she tells Piers Morgan on the latest episode of Life Stories, reflecting on turning down the role initially. "I think that at 41, I didn't know if I could pull it off. I just felt I didn't want to put myself out there and be ridiculed.

"40 now seems so young but then, there is ageism everywhere, not just in Hollywood and this sort of thing about being an older woman and preying on younger men," she continues.

Despite eventually saying yes to the role and playing Samantha for six series and two movies, Cattrall recently turned down a part in a third Sex and the City film, something she says was a clear choice for her.

"Not for me," she tells Morgan when quizzed on whether there will be a third SATC spin-off. "That was part of turning 60. That was a very clear moment of, how many years do I have left and what do I want to do it, what haven't I done? I feel that the show is the best when it was the series and the bonus was the two movies."

She adds: "I remember so clearly making that decision. Last December I got a phone call and it was concerning that and I knew exactly, I could feel it, and the answer was simply, 'Thank you but no, I'm good'."

The fallout from the shelved project has been pretty dramatic, with some blaming Cattrall for the film's cancellation. Cattrall herself has called out Sarah Jessica Parker (who played series protagonist Carrie Bradshaw) for "not being nicer" about the whole thing.

"This isn't about more money, it's not about more scenes, it's not about any of those things," she says.

"This is about a clear decision, an empowered decision in my life, to end one chapter and start another. I'm 61. It's now. The other girls are 10 years younger than me, you know, and that is their choice.

"I wish them the best. I will be the one in the audience cheering them on."

Piers Morgan's Life Stories: Kim Cattrall airs at 9pm tonight (October 23) on ITV.
