Catwoman writer reveals even he thinks it's a bad movie
Halle Berry's Catwoman is one of the first black-led superhero movies and female-led superhero ones too.
It could have been a huge moment, but it ended up being a terrible mess that suffers from horrible CGI, a bonkers plot about ageing cream, no links to Batman and too much other nonsense to list here. Even Berry herself hates it.
Now, one of the film's writers – John Rogers, who also worked on 2007's Transformers and created the TV series The Librarians – has also laid into the 2004 movie after reading what he calls a "bad take" about it that questioned why it wasn't seen to be as culturally relevant as Black Panther.
As one of the credited writers of CATWOMAN, I believe I have the authority to say: because it was a shit movie dumped by the studio at the end of a style cycle, and had zero cultural relevance either in front of or behind the camera.
This is a bad take. Feel shame. https://t.co/6sth7w38Xx- John Rogers (@jonrog1) February 24, 2018
"As one of the credited writers of Catwoman," he wrote, "I believe I have the authority to say: because it was a shit movie dumped by the studio at the end of a style cycle, and had zero cultural relevance either in front of or behind the camera.
"Also full disclosure: I've never watched the movie all the way through in one sitting. I skipped premiere night to shoot @jenni_baird audition footage for Global Frequency."
It's a far cry from the reaction the comic book world's latest big screen adaptation is getting, as Black Panther has had a great response from critics and cinema-goers, with both Michelle Obama and Oprah among the many, many people singing its praises.
Will Smith also praised the film in a powerful video review, in which he called it a "spectacular" film and explained how it nearly brought him to tears.
"You guys have challenged, and potentially even shattered, a lot of long-time, long-held false Hollywood beliefs and paradigms," he added.
Black Panther is out in cinemas now.
