Caught on camera: Shocking moment carer slammed dementia patient's head into a chair

This is the shocking moment a BUPA carer manhandled a 77-year-old dementia patient before slamming her head against a chair.

The disturbing footage was caught on secret camera hidden inside a television by Betty Boylan’s relatives after they found bruises on her when they visited her at the £1,000-a-month care home.

Shocking footage showed carer Bina Begum lifting the great-grandmother by her head then throwing her back into her chair so hard that it rocked backwards.

On another occasion, another carer was caught on film spraying deodorant in the retired nurse’s face, joking it is “better than poo” when a colleague voiced concerns that it had gone into her mouth.

Betty’s relatives went to the police after recording the footage at the Bupa-run Perry Locks Care Home in Birmingham in September last year.

Begum, 49, of Perry Barr, Birmingham, has been spared jail after admitting ill-treating and neglecting Betty at Birmingham magistrates court. She was handed a 12-month community order with 40 hours of unpaid work as well as a £270 fine and has since been sacked.

But Betty’s relatives have hit out at the sentence, saying she should have been jailed.

Son-in-law Nigel Jarvis, 56, said: “The sentence was a disgrace. She should have gone to prison. That would have sent a message to other carers who treat people like this.”

Betty first moved into the Bupa home in September 2015 for respite care but had to stay there when her husband Timmy, 74, fell ill and died in March last year.

But after evidence of his mistreatment came to light she went to live with her daughter Bernadette and son-in-law Nigel.

Sacked – both workers have been sacked from the Bupa-run care home

Bupa Care Service has confirmed that both carers have been sacked after the footage came to light.

Director of Quality Vivienne Birch said: “The actions of these individuals are unacceptable, we immediately removed them from the home and they have since been formally dismissed.

“We were shocked and saddened by the footage. We’re deeply sorry this happened and the distress it has caused Mrs Boylan’s family.

“We’re proud of the care our staff provide and do not tolerate behaviour like this at any of our homes.”

Nazia Jan, defending Begum, said she was “very, very remorseful” and the incident was “completely out of character”.
