To celebrate the beginning of Black History Month on Thursday 1 October, Cbeebies has chosen Baroness Floella Benjamin's Coming to England picture book for its daily bedtime story.

The inspiring true story is based on a young Floella's own arrival in London from Trinidad as part of the Windrush generation, when citizens from the commonwealth were asked to move to Britain to help re-build the post-war country.

Historian and presenter of A House Through Time Professor David Olusoga will be reading the book, written by Floella and illustrated by Diane Ewen, ahead of its release on 8 October.

The book follows ten-year-old Floella as she and her family set sail from the Caribbean to a new life in London in 1960 and is described as an: "optimistic and very personal story that shows how courage and determination can often overcome adversity."

David said in a press release: "I am delighted to take part in CBeebies Bedtime Stories. After reading Coming to England to my daughter earlier this month, I knew this was a very important and special book that needed to be shared widely.

"Not only does the story encourage empathy from children at a very young age but also a greater understanding of the Windrush generation. It explains at an elementary level what it means to be a British person with Black Caribbean heritage, a background that deserves to be celebrated and learned about."

David went on to say: "Stories are the bridge to opening up minds and personal stories like Baroness Floella Benjamin's deserve to be heard."

Black History Month is all about celebrating and sharing Black British history that often goes untold, so this is a perfect pick.

Watch the special story on the Cbeebies Channel at 6.50pm 1 October. CBeebies Bedtime Stories is on each weekday at 6.50pm on the CBeebies channel and is also available on BBC iPlayer.
