CCTV clip shows Nero McLean, 16, sprint up behind Junior Osborne ahead of fatal attack

A CCTV clip shows the moment a 16-year-old boy sprinted across Narborough Road in Leicester with a large knife moments before murdering a father by stabbing him in the back of the neck. The knife cut through Junior Osborne's jugular vein and went down into his body, hitting his lungs.

Mr Osborne, 50, who had been stopped on the pavement on his bike, fell to the ground and died at the scene after being brutally attacked by Nero McLean. The CCTV footage omits the moment of the knife attack, which was seen in full by the jury at Leicester Crown Court last month.

The trial concluded with unanimous verdicts for 16-year-old knifeman Nero McLean, who was convicted of murder, and four others, including McLean's twin brother Nevardo, who were all convicted of manslaughter. Nero McLean was today given a life sentence with a minimum of 17 years behind bars, and the others each jailed for eight years for supporting and helping in the attack.

The motive for the attack remains unclear. During today's sentencing hearing, the judge, Justice Neil Calver, said he rejected all the claims by the defendants during the trial, including that another man had threatened to harm them if they did not carry out the attack.

During the trial, the identities of the 16-year-old twins could not be reported by the Press because of their ages. That restriction was lifted today after an application to the judge was made by LeicestershireLive, meaning their names and faces can now be published. It can also now be reported that all five of the defendants had previously been caught with knives by the police.

Leicestershire Police's Detective Inspector Mark Parish, the senior investigating officer, said after the sentencings today: “As I’ve previously said, I believe this was a planned and co-ordinated attack to kill Junior.

“Enormous credit and praise must go to detectives in the major crime team for their effort in going through hours of footage to identify the group as well as our uniformed colleagues for their efforts both at the scene and in arresting all involved as enquiries continued.

“Hopefully today’s outcome helps to increase public confidence in Team Leicestershire and the work we do to bring offenders to justice.”

During the sentencing, Justice Calver told Nero McLean: "You plunged the knife into the righthand side of Junior's neck. The force required was towards the severe end and on any view it was a brutal, cold-blooded killing that took him by surprise.

"A crueller, more heartless killing is hard to imagine."
