CCTV shows drug addict who threatened to murder police attempt to force his way into flat using a RAKE

This is the moment an on the run knifeman attempted to break into a flat with a garden rake.

Bungling crack cocaine addict Ryan Liebenrood, had fled Devon following a brutal raid where he attacked two people with a hammer and sickle in Newton Abbot on May 14.

One man was left with a 10cm wound and Liebenrood, who claimed to commit offences to settle drug debts, went on the run to the West Midlands where just five days later he attempted to break into a flat in Acocks Green.

CCTV shows the moment the hapless 33-year-old attempted to smash his way into the flat, in Warwick Road, using a garden rake he found discarded in an alley way on May 19 this year.

He was later spotted by police in Olton Boulevard East, Acocks Green, Birmingham, on June 3.

Officers approached him but he pulled a knife and hammer threatening to kill them but the luckless criminal was disarmed with a baton and hit with CS spray before he was arrested.

The 33-year-old, of no fixed abode, has now been jailed for 14 years for his crimes.

PC Adam Jones − who has been with West Midlands Police for 10 years − recalled: "We were heading back to the station but thought we'd have a bit of a drive around on the lookout for Liebenrood as we knew he was wanted.

"Luckily enough we spotted him and as we approached he pulled out a hammer followed by the knife. He was waving both in our faces, threatening to chop our heads off, and refusing to put the weapons down.

Investigating officer, Detective Constable Craig Tennant, of West Midlands Police, said: "Liebenrood is a man with a history of extreme violence with weapons... it took some guts for the two neighbourhood cops to front him up and detain him before he could risk injuring anyone else.

"They (the officers) did a fantastic job and their bravery has now resulted in Liebenrood being put behind bars for a long time."

"The adrenaline kicked in and we managed to overpower him before he could do any damage; it was good to hear he'd been given a long prison term."

Liebenrood was jailed for nine years for attempted robbery and wounding on May 14 , plus an extra three years for another robbery attempt at the same Devon address on May 9 and consecutive one-year terms for the Acocks Green attempted break-in and 3 June weapons offences.

He admitted the offences.
