Celebrity Race Across the World's Scott Mills has opened up about the early days of his relationship with his husband Sam Vaughn.

The BBC Radio DJ and his then-fiancé spoke about how things didn't happen between them for a while, despite a mutual attraction, in tonight's (September 4) fourth episode of season 2.

"The moment I met Sam, everything went blurry," Scott said in a confessional, explaining that he hadn't felt that way before about someone but circumstances got in the way.

"We'd both come out of long-term relationships. I was full steam ahead. He was not. So he was, 'errrrmmmm not sure I could do this right now.' I was gutted."

Sam said: "Scott asked me, 'Do you just want to be friends?' And I had to be honest and said 'I think I do at the moment', and Scott, rightfully at that time, said, 'I can't do this', and there was about six to seven months where he didn't talk to me...

"I think over that time I missed him more and more, and I think I realised what I was letting go."

Both of them said that the trip has helped them reaffirm their love for each other. For the six months or so before the race, there had been some weeks where they wouldn't see each other for more than an hour or two.

Tonight's episode saw all the celebrities race from São Paulo to Tigre, finally taking them out of Brazil, via Uruguay and Paraguay, and into Argentina.

Scott and Sam spent a lot of money to get a fast ferry, while Jeff and Freddie Brazier faced a lengthy hold-up but made good time overall. Kelly Brook and her husband Jeremy Parisi argued over money again but finally took the time to do something romantic with a tango class.

Ted Lasso's Kola Bokinni lost his passport and had a falling out with his cousin Mary Ellen. The person giving them a job at a vineyard managed to phone up and find it, but it cost them a lot of time.

Arriving at the checkpoint first were Scott and Sam, followed seven hours later by Kelly and Jeremy. Three hours later, Kola and Mary Ellen arrived in third place. The episode finished before Jeff and Freddie arrived, so we don't know how far behind they are.

Celebrity Race Across the World airs Wednesday nights at 9pm on BBC One and iPlayer. Previous episodes of the celeb and civilian versions can be streamed on iPlayer.
