Exciting plans are underway for Croydon to become the 2023 ‘London Borough of Culture’, celebrating the unique identity, diverse communities and rich heritage of Croydon.

The programme for ‘This is Croydon’ will showcase Croydon to the world. It will include major events with international headliners performing alongside emerging local talent, plus hundreds of creative activities from Croydon communities.

Launched in 2017 by the Mayor of London, the ‘London Borough of Culture’ award aims to shine a light on the character and diversity of London’s boroughs and bring culture to everyone. It showcases the power of uniting local people in bringing about positive change.

Croydon’s people will be at the centre of the programme and involved in planning the event. The aim is to reach around 250000 individuals and involve every school, 1500 artists, and a huge network of residents from across Croydon. The event will also emphasise the borough's rich musical legacy, with live concerts and a new music heritage trail.

Croydon was chosen for this unique opportunity in 2023 after a successful bid to the Mayor of London in March 2020, winning a grant of £1.35m. The programme has been created by the Mayor of London to put culture at the heart of local communities, illuminating the character and diversity of London’s boroughs and celebrating everyone’s backgrounds.

Justine Simons OBE - London's Mayor for Culture and the Creative Industries, stated that, "With such rich diversity and talent, it will be a brilliant celebration of the best that the borough has to offer for residents and visitors to enjoy, leaving a legacy for generations to come."
