Celebrities have reacted to the permanent suspension of Donald Trump’s personal Twitter account.

The social media company banned the US president’s account @RealDonaldTrump on Friday (8 January) following mounting pressure from the public to do so.

The account was first temporarily suspended for 12 hours on Wednesday (6 January) after Trump violated Twitter’s “Civic Integrity policy” for posting a video addressing his supporters who had earlier stormed the Capitol Building in an incident that left five dead.

Responding to news of the permanent ban, celebrities have shared their delight on social media. Seinfeld star Julia Louis-Dreyfus wrote on Twitter: “What the f*** took you so long @jack?”, addressing the company’s CEO Jack Dorsey.

Marvel alum Mark Ruffalo thanked Twitter, while Jameela Jamil wrote: “This year is looking up again.”

Star Wars actor Mark Hamill shared a screenshot of the president’s suspended account, accompanied with the caption: “And how is YOUR day going?”

“Uhm. Anyone worried he might lose his mind. Who the hell is going to explain to him that his precious Twitter followers are all gone,” wrote comedian Sarah Cooper – who became famous last year for her impressions of the US president.

Bette Midler asked her fans to retweet her post that stated: “THANK YOU #TWITTER”.

“This move by Twitter and Facebook are the biggest blows to his fascism,” wrote John Cusack.

News of whether Facebook will follow suit in permanently blocking the president’s personal account is yet to be announced.

Community’s Yvette Nicole Brown – who played Shirley on the hit sitcom – added: “@RealDonaldTrump’s Twitter page was suspended permanently. I heard there’s no official word from the White House. Ya know why? Because ol’ dudes Twitter page was suspended PERMANENTLY!”

Actor Josh Gad wrote: “All we got to do now is get the Nuclear codes out of his hands and we should be good.”

Borat star Sacha Baron Cohen – who has long been a vocal critic of Trump’s – responded to the news by retweeting a previous post calling on Dorsey to block the president’s account, accompanied by a new caption that reads: “Twitter finally banned Trump! We did it!”

He later called it “the most important moment in the history of social media”.

Scrubs star Zach Braff joked: “Can I have your twitter login?” while author Stephen King stated that Twitter “finally got fed up with Trump’s lying bulls*** and took away his megaphone”, adding that the company’s decision “makes me proud to be a twitterhead”.

Trump’s son, however, took to Twitter to complain that “free-speech no longer exists in America”.

He added: “It died with big tech and what’s left is only there for a chosen few.”

Following Trump’s removal from the social media sites, people are now calling for the outgoing president to be digitally removed from 1992 sequel Home Alone: Lost in New York.
