Celebrity Island with Bear Grylls was never supposed to be a holiday for the contestants, but comedian Mark Watson claims the show almost finished him off for good.

A total of four celebrities have left the island in the current series, including Mark, who fans saw leave in this week's episode after experiencing chest pain and insomnia.

Now, amid all his home comforts and "junk food", Mark has admitted that the experiment left him in "a pretty poor state".

Talking to The Sun, Mark said that his body had become "weary", adding: "I lost a huge amount of weight – about two and a half stone.

"I was walking around like an 80-year-old. You do come back in a pretty poor state."

Saying that it was an "enormous relief" to return home, Mark insisted that he had no regrets about leaving the island in the middle of the series.

"I don't think I could've gone on any longer than I did," he said. "Watching it back, I'm glad I didn't stay any longer because I was definitely at the limits of my abilities...

"It becomes hard to find something to laugh about. There was hardly any conversation towards the end because we were trying to survive."

Mark wasn't the only celebrity to quit the island prematurely – Breaking Bad star RJ Mitte was the first to walk, while Olympian Sharron Davies and Rizzle Kicks' Jordan Stephens left a week later.

Celebrity Island with Bear Grylls airs on Channel 4.
