Michael Mosley's celebrity pals have paid tribute to the 'national treasure' after news broke of his death in Greece. The TV doctor's body was discovered in a rocky area on the island of Symi, five days after he vanished.

His wife, Dr Clare Bailey, revealed her "adventurous" husband had completed an "incredible climb" before taking "the wrong route". She said he'd collapsed "where he couldn't be easily seen" but she was "taking comfort in the fact that he so very nearly made it".

Dr Mosley's death left many shocked and devastated, with the likes of Jamie Oliver, Carol Vorderman and Prof Brian Cox sharing heartfelt tributes. Former Labour deputy leader Tom Watson also paid tribute to his "hero" and said: "It's hard to describe how upset I am."

Jamie Oliver took to Instagram to offer his condolences to Dr Mosley's family. He wrote: "What a wonderfully sweet, kind and gentle man he was. he did such a lot of good for public health with his TV shows and research. He was a curious investigator, producer and presenter and often changed the conversation around many public health issues for the better. He will be sadly missed…. Love and thoughts to Clare and all of his family."

Former Countdown and I'm A Celeb star Carol Vorderman said she was "extremely sad" to hear the "shocking news". She added: "He worked so hard to introduce the modern science behind health and wellness and was extremely successful communicating it. My thoughts right now are with his family and friends."

Prof Brian Cox said: "He was such an important figure both on and off-screen in the BBC science unit, and as a mentor to many of us when we started out in science presenting. And, as many of our colleagues have already said on here, he was a genuinely lovely man. So sorry for his family. RIP Michael."

Ulrika Jonsson was among celebrities who penned an emotional message on Instagram, sharing a smiling snap of the doctor. She wrote alongside it: "Such tragic news. What a lovely, lovely man. Thinking of his family."

Dr Mosley's co-presenter on Trust Me, I’m A Doctor said he was a “national treasure” as she paid tribute to the “hugely-talented” medic. Speaking to BBC News, Dr Saleyha Ahsan said: “Michael’s a national treasure and he’s so personable. I can now appreciate that’s a one-off, not everyone is able to make other people feel so at ease with lights and cameras in front of them.

“But then to forget about all of that and just to focus on the science, on the story, on the message we’re trying to get out, is such a talented man, hugely talented.”

Former Strictly star Ranvir Singh also took to Instagram to share a tribute to Dr Mosley: "Terribly sad news. Thank you for changing the lives of thousands of people - including mine - for the better."
