Cesar Azpilicueta vows that Chelsea will learn from their mistakes after experiencing the pain of a London derby defeat to rivals Tottenham.

Tottenham put on a scintillating display to unceremoniously end Chelsea's unbeaten start to the Premier League season with a 3-1 win at Wembley on Saturday.

Spurs climbed above Maurizio Sarri's men with a performance that showcases their own potential to challenge Manchester City and Liverpool at the top of the table.

Goals from Dele Alli and Harry Kane put them two up inside 16 minutes and Son Heung-min made it three after the break with a brilliant solo goal.

Chelsea were a shadow of the side that had not tasted defeat in their opening 12 league games, though did bag a late consolation through Olivier Giroud.

Sarri will now have to contemplate his first loss in the Blues dugout, having only previously lost in the Community Shield against Manchester City.

Speaking after the game, Azpilicueta said: "The start was really bad. After 15 minutes being 2-0 down is tough to come back from.

"It’s true in the last couple of games we didn’t start the game in the way we have to start. In some ways we didn’t pay for it, but we paid for it straightaway against Tottenham. When you have this handicap it’s tough.

"Tottenham are an aggressive team, they press well, and we were not able to get out with the ball and play our football.

"We knew if we could get a goal we would be in the game, but it went in the other way. At 3-0 we tried to fight until the end but we were not able to get anything from the game."

Azpilicueta has promised Chelsea fans that the squad will look for ways to improve after such a disappointing defeat, adding: "It’s a tough one to take.

"We have to do better and it hurts to lose in this way. We have to learn from our mistakes, to improve and come back as a team.

"We need to be strong and get back to winning ways."
