The Chainsmokers have dropped a surprise new single - and it's a real heartbreaker.

Fresh off their unexpected performance with Coldplay at the BRIT Awards in February, the EDM duo have released yet another track from their upcoming debut album Memories...Do Not Open, and have gone in a different direction.

Who knew EDM could be so versatile?

'The One' - unsurprisingly - is the first track from the band's new album, and is a little slower-paced than their usual jams.

The song starts with a haunting female vocal, before a mournful piano melody comes in, introducing the band's lead singer Drew Taggart to the track.

It then goes on to tell a tale of regret, isolation and melancholy, with lyrics such as: "You know, I'm sorry, I won't make it to your party.

"Got caught up in my own selfishness. It won't let me be a part of this."

Fitting perhaps, since the band have received negative attention in the past after several unflattering magazine profiles.

The Chainsmokers first ruffled feathers in a cover interview with Billboard where they came across as slightly fickle creatures, talking about their obsession with alcohol, models and penis size.

Taggart was even quoted as saying: "Even before success, p***y was number one."

It didn't get any better when Rolling Stone covered them months later, putting their foots in it again by saying on record that Lady Gaga's comeback track 'Perfect Illusion' "sucked".

Oh dear.
