After leaving Netflix viewers gripped with his latest turn in tense drama Criminal, David Tennant is now back in action in an all-new thriller as Channel 4 has released a first look at its new drama Deadwater Fell.

The four-part series follows two families in the aftermath of a horrific crime, as a seemingly perfect and happy family is murdered by someone they know and trust, sending shockwaves through the small Scottish community of Kirkdarroch that they call home.

David Tennant stars as Tom Kendrick, the local GP and a trusted member of the community, who's left as the sole survivor of a fire that kills his perfect wife Kate (Anna Madeley) and their three little girls.

Meanwhile, one-time outsider Jess (Cush Jumbo) has settled in the community with her husband Steve (Matthew McNulty), a police sergeant who's not particularly kept busy in their sleepy town, and their happy life together is only marred by their struggle to have a child of their own.

But one night sees the community's happy illusions come crashing down as Tom and Kate's house goes up in flames, and it soon emerges that Kate and her children weren't killed by the fire after all.

With the fingers of suspicion pointing at Tom and then elsewhere, Jess becomes desperate to uncover the truth behind the tragedy and is willing to put everything on the line to find answers – no matter how difficult they are to accept.

Dubbed a "forensic dissection of two relationships" as much as it is an exploration of a horrific crime, Deadwater Fell comes from writer Daisy Coulam, who has previously worked on Death in Paradise, Humans and Grantchester.

"Daisy Coulam has written something very special, chilling and fascinating with these scripts. I am honoured and delighted to be part of telling this extraordinary story," Tennant said in a statement ahead of filming.

"I'm so excited to be part of bringing Daisy's dark and mysterious story and the character of Jess to life," Jumbo also added.

Deadwater Fell is coming soon to Channel 4.
