Rumours have been flying around that Australian soap Neighbours is in danger of being dropped by Channel 5.

The Daily Mirror is claiming that talks between the channel and production company FremantleMedia have hit a wall and added that American company Viacom - who own MTV, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon, and bought Channel 5 back in 2014 - allegedly aren't keen on renegotiating for the soap.

At the moment, we don't know for sure what's going on but a spokesperson on behalf of Channel 5 and FreemantleMedia has told Digital Spy: "We don't comment on commercial contracts."

Neighbours is one of Channel 5's most popular shows, and a key part of the daytime schedule alongside Home & Away.

It's Neighbours' popularity in the UK that keeps it afloat, as it only airs to a small audience on the digital channel Eleven in its native Australia. The cast and crew have previously thanked the UK fans for their dedication via Twitter.

If Channel 5 were to lose the show and another big-name UK broadcaster doesn't pick it up, then the entire future of the show could be in jeopardy.

Let's hope that Neighbours' upcoming London week (which we've seen by the way, and is brilliant) is a smashing success and puts to bed any potential ideas about dropping the show.

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 5.30pm on Channel 5.
