After years and years of dithering, Gambit is actually definitely going to be released – on February 14, 2019.

There's going to be a lot of love in the X-Men universe that Valentine's Day.

20th Century Fox also confirmed on Thursday (October 12) that Pirates of the Caribbean filmmaker Gore Verbinski is directing the X-Men spin-off after rumours linked him to it last week. RoboCop's Josh Zetumer has written the script.

It's not been an easy ride for Gambit. There was a point when it seemed Remy LeBeau just wasn't going to happen – especially last summer when director Doug Liman quit the project.

This was after first director Rupert Wyatt already left.

But we actually have Ryan Reynolds to thank that Gambit is now happening.

Tatum recently revealed that the box-office successes of Deadpool and Logan have persuaded Fox to give Gambit another chance.

"We lit a fuse on the first one and just blew it completely out of the water. I think we got lucky – we got hit with some setbacks and it was all for a good reason," he explained.

Name-checking Deadpool and Wolverine epic Logan, he added: "We were trying to do something completely different. We were trying to do something that this genre of movie hasn't seen before."

So, bring on the one-year-and-a-bit wait and pray nothing else happens before then.
