Chappell Roan Earns Cheers After Fiery Red Carpet Altercation at 2024 MTV VMAs: 'Not Me, Bitch!'

"You tell 'em, girl," someone said after Roan responded to an apparent heckler ahead of the show in New York

Chappell Roan stood her ground on the VMAs red carpet.

On Wednesday, Sept. 11, the "Good Luck, Babe" singer and MTV VMAs 2024 nominee called someone out on the step-and-repeat before the show in Long Island, New York.

A clip from the VMAs red carpet pre-show at the UBS Arena, later shared widely by fans on X (formerly Twitter), shows the 26-year-old pop star react after someone on the carpet can be heard saying "shut the f--- up." Variety also shared another angle of the interaction, identifying the person she was responding to as a photographer.

"You shut the f--- up," Roan said, pointing in the apparent heckler's direction.

After backing away to have her outfit adjusted, Roan added: "Don't. Not me, bitch!"

Roan's reaction prompted some cheers and chatter on the carpet, including from one attendee who could be heard responding, "You tell 'em, girl."

It is unclear what prompted the exchange on the red carpet. A rep for Roan did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

Roan's red-carpet response came as she debuted her medieval-style VMAs outfit ahead of the show. The look featured a sheer flowing Y/Project gown, a mint green cape and thigh-high boots, as she accessorized with a sword, metal cuffs and plenty of jewelry.

Roan is nominated for best new artist at the VMAs, an award she was nominated for alongside the likes of Benson Boone, Gracie Abrams, Shaboozey, Teddy Swims and Tyla. Roan will also be performing at the show, as are Sabrina Carpenter, Camila Cabello and Katy Perry, who is the latest recipient of the video vanguard award.

It's been a whirlwind year for Roan, who has charted several songs on the Billboard Hot 100 and drawn massive festival crowds across the country. But as she told Bowen Yang during their recent Interview Magazine conversation, even with her radio and streaming success, she's "never given a f--- about the charts or being on the radio."

"The biggest thing has been getting recognized, and just feeling not myself. And touring, it’s all-consuming," Roan (real name Kayleigh Amstutz) added in the interview. "I’ve never given a f--- about the charts or being on the radio, but it’s so crazy how industry people are taking me more seriously than before. I’m like, 'I’ve been doing this the whole time, bitch.'"

Roan added that her career "doesn’t mean anything more now that I have a charting album and song."

"If anything, I’m just like, 'F--- you guys for not seeing what actually matters.' A chart is so fleeting," she said. "Everyone leaves the charts. I’m just like, 'This is giving valedictorian.'"

The 2024 MTV VMAs air on Sept. 11 at 8 p.m. ET/ PT live from the UBS Arena in New York.
