'Chapter coming to an end' as longstanding Derby charity shop announces closure
A Derby charity shop on a busy city centre street is set to close its doors for good - just one month after another nearby charity shop announced it would close in February. Charity shops are without doubt a staple of the British high street, often attracting countless bargain hunters armed with tips and tricks to navigate their way through the busy clothes rails and tight spaces.
A spokesperson for the Padley charity shop in East Street, next to the Co-operative bank, made the "sad" announcement that it would be closing its doors in February after years of acting as a "cornerstone of the community". The news comes after another nearby charity shop, Derbyshire Mind - near the entrace to the developing Market Hall in Osnabruck Street - announced it would be closing its doors in February following a challenging period brought on by the cost of living crisis.
On Tuesday (January 28), a spokesperson for the Padley charity shop said: "We are sad to announce that our Padley Charity shop in Derby will be closing its doors on February 7. This decision has not been made lightly, and we are deeply grateful for the unwavering support and generosity that has been shown to us over the years."

Padley has supported people at risk of homelessness, poverty and hunger in Derby since 1985. In 2024 alone, it provided more than 20,000 meals, 1,400 toiletry parcels and 450 clothing parcels.
Its mission is to "support and empower" those affected by homelessness by providing an "accepting and safe environment" with meaningful activities to improve health and develop self confidence. "Our Derby shop has been a cornerstone of the community, and while this chapter is coming to an end, our commitment to our mission remains steadfast," a spokesperson added.
"We will continue to serve the community through our new Padley@YMCA Derbyshire Community Hub on Parcel Terrace. Thank you for all your support and for being part of our journey."
The new community hub will provide a range of services to the homeless and families at risk of poverty. It offers a warm space to eat and socialise and will house educational workshops, wellness initiatives and assistance with access to food and financial support.
People can still support the charity in a number of ways following the closure in February, by volunteering, fundraising and donating. For more details and how to get involved with Padley, click the link here for more.
