Charcoal-activated vegan croissants just might be the world's most unphotogenic pastry

A London café has raised eyebrows with its latest culinary creation: a charcoal-activated vegan croissant that it swears “tastes better than it looks.” One can only hope…

Hailing from the Italian snack bar Coco di Mama, the unconventional pastry has gone viral after a curious diner snapped a photo.

Twitter user Amy Charlotte Kean decided to share her find with the world, captioning her photo, “I feel like this might be a bit much, even for East London,” which was liked more than 30,000 times.

The croissant — which is sold for £1.80 (about $2.50 U.S.) each — is said to contain 285 calories per serving, according to the restaurant’s website.

While it’s totally vegan, its allergens include gluten (wheat, barley), soy, and traces of nuts and sesame.

Charcoal has been lauded as a “superfood” lately for its detoxifying qualities, which are said to reduce the body’s absorption of toxic substances by 47 percent.

The black ingredient is even used in toothpaste to whiten teeth, as well as in skin care products.

But does that really mean we want to taint our delicious bronzed pastries with the stuff? Probably not…
