Passengers were evacuated and told not to enter Charing Cross station after a false alarm.

A statement on the National Rail website warned a fire alarm had been activated, leading to services being delayed.

The statement read: "Fire alarms sounding at London Charing Cross means trains will be delayed or revised. This is expected to continue until 9.30pm.

"The fire alarms at London Charing Cross have been activated and the station is being evacuated.

Southeastern Railway services tweeted: "Charing Cross is being evacuated at present, please avoid until further notice."

The company provided an update shortly after, telling panicked commuters: "[The incident was] reported to be a false alarm....now reopen."

The Standard approached Network Rail for comment.
