The former chef to the Prince and Princess of Wales has scooped a prize as the capital’s best caterer.

Mervyn Wycherley, 70, who was Charles and Diana’s chef for 13 years after a decade working for the Queen, runs Retro Catering Ltd.

The firm was named central London’s catering company of the year at the Global Hospitality Awards and praised for its “all round quality”. Mr Wycherley said: “This is very much a team effort, I am thrilled.”

The chef, who joined Charles and Diana on their honeymoon, said he had been “honoured” to work for them. “It certainly helped me establish the business and it has gone from strength to strength,” he added.

After the honeymoon in 1981, Diana signed a note to Mr Wycherley: “With endless gratitude from a couple of overweight Waleses.” He later worked for her at Kensington Palace after the couple’s separation.

Retro Catering Ltd is the resident company running events at Westminster Boating Base.
