A creepy Ouija-board style game where youngsters use pencils to summon a Mexican demon has swept Twitter, becoming a top worldwide trend.

The ‘Charlie Charlie Challenge’ involves forming a cross with two pencils and writing the words ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ before asking, ‘Charlie are you there?’

Supposedly, at this point a sombrero-wearing spectre ‘moves’ the pencils - with enthusiastic users claiming that he has answered queries about romance, life and even Zayn Malik from One Direction.

It’s not clear where the ‘tradition’ arose from - although Twitter assertions that it is an ‘ancient Mexican rite’ are absolute hokum.

Fans claim that there are strict rules to talking to Charlie, and that if one fails to say goodbye to him, for instance, a portal to the netherworld can be left open.

Why exactly teenagers are choosing to risk visitations from Hell in order to find out the release date of Justin Bieber’s next album is less clear.
