Charlie Lawson has admitted there is a chance he could return to 'Coronation Street' one day.

The 62-year-old star is best known for playing Jim McDonald in the ITV soap, a role he played regularly in the 1990s and has returned to for sporadic stints ever since.

He said: "Jim is in Australia with his girlfriend and she's about 25. As long as the character is alive, there's a chance he might be back."

During his time on the cobbles - which he first walked down in 1989 - Jim battled alcoholism, committed manslaughter and was most notable for his stormy marriage to Liz McDonald (Beverley Callard), which ended for good when the character was sent back to prison following a failed robbery attempt.

He last appeared on the soap in 2018, attempting to con Liz out of money by passing a young woman off as the daughter she thought she had miscarried 25 years earlier.

It comes as the actor - who had a tough upbringing in Northern Ireland - has put pen to paper for a warts-and-all autobiography.

He told Racing TV: "It has been a very cathartic experience because I've been back to boarding school. It was a tough school. But there are other things that went on there...and I have talked to other boys it happened to. Going from that, I cover getting involved with some loyalist paramilitaries."

He first announced he was working on the tome back in March, when he promised fans it would reveal all the "good and the bad" from his life.
