Charlize Theron will be starring in a new female-fronted action movie for Netflix titled The Old Guard.

Based on the comic book series by Greg Rucka and illustrator Leandro Fernández, The Old Guard focuses on a small group of immortal soldiers who have been working as mercenaries for centuries.

But the group, led by a woman named Andy, get a shock when they find a new immortal woman, not long after they discover an evil group have video evidence of their immortality.

Theron will be joined by KiKi Layne, who is best known for starring in 2018 drama If Beale Street Could Talk.

Writing and directing will be Gina Prince-Bythewood, best known for The Secret Life of Bees and Beyond the Lights.

Theron will produce the film through her company Denver and Delilah, alongside Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger.

Prince-Bythewood was previously linked to the female-led Spider-Man spin-off Silver and Black.

The Spider-Man film was initially given a release date of February 8, 2019 in the US, but last year it was reported that production had been delayed 'indefinitely'.

Prince-Bythewood, who was writing the script as well as directing, responded to the rumour on Twitter, saying: "Still working on the script. All about the script."

Meanwhile, Charlize will next be seen in Long Shot opposite Seth Rogen and as Fox News host Megyn Kelly in Jay Roach’s untitled Roger Ailes drama.
