Charlotte High School Students Stage Protests

High school students throughout the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District staged protests at their schools on Friday, September 23. The student protests began after unrest that followed a police shooting that killed Keith Lamont Scott on Tuesday. School officials told local media students were allowed to protest, though walking out of class was considered a code violation.

Three nights of protests took place in Charlotte after Scott’s death, becoming violent at times. But the protests and curfew put into place were not expected to disrupt Friday night football games, according to a report. It was unclear if protests were planned for Friday night, including those similar to the ones started by San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police were searching for a suspect on a warrant when they came upon Scott on Tuesday, whom they say had a gun that he pointed at police. His family, however, said he had no gun and was sitting in his car reading a book, waiting for his son to arrive on the school bus.
