Lee Bowyer was due to speak to Harry Kewell today but the Charlton caretaker manager insisted he did not know if his former Leeds team-mate will take charge at The Valley.

The Australian consortium close to completing a takeover of Charlton want to install Kewell as manager.

Charlton yesterday named Bowyer as manager on a caretaker basis after Karl Robinson quit to take over at Oxford United.

Bowyer took his first steps into coaching under Kewell with Watford Under-23s and this morning said he would ring the Australian amid suggestions he could be named Charlton’s new manager.

Bowyer said: “I have not spoken to him for a little while now. I will probably give him a call later today. I am here until told otherwise. I do not know how long that will be. Hopefully it will be until the end of the season.”

Kewell is currently in charge of League Two side Crawley Town.

The Australian consortium have agreed a price for Charlton with owner Roland Duchatelet but Bowyer said he is in the dark over when a takeover will be completed.

“It has nothing to do with me,” said Bowyer, who takes charge of his first game against Plymouth at The Valley tomorrow.

“I spoke to the owner and [director] Richard Murray yesterday and they both just said good luck and they are on the end of a phone.”

Charlton are ninth in League One, five points outside the play-off places with 10 games left.
