Charlton midfielder Ricky Holmes is set to complete his £400,000 move to Sheffield United.

Addicks owner Roland Duchatelet has sanctioned the sale and Holmes’s exit is a huge setback for Karl Robinson. The Charlton manager was desperate to keep Holmes but Duchatelet is in talks with a number of parties about a takeover and wants to recoup a transfer fee before he sells the club.

Robinson hoped Sheffield United midfielder Samir Carruthers would move to Charlton as part of the switch but Duchatelet was only interested in a straight cash deal.

Holmes has been a standout player for Charlton this season and losing the midfielder is a blow to their chances of getting into the play-offs in League One.

The 30-year-old was in the stands at Bramall Lane on Friday night to see Sheffield United draw with city rivals Sheffield Wednesday after he agreed terms on his Charlton exit.

Robinson felt Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder would have been open to allowing Carruthers to move to Charlton in exchange as part of the transfer.

The manager, speaking after Charlton won 1-0 at Bury on Saturday to move into sixth in the table, said: “I wanted Samir to come back the other way and I think Chris would have done something. You will have to draw your own conclusions on what prevented that from happening.”
