What is there to do in Amsterdam?
Amsterdam is an amazing city for art-lovers. At the world-famous Rijksmuseum, the national museum of the Netherlands, you can see breath-taking paintings by old Dutch masters, including Vermeer and Rembrandt. Rembrandt's Night Watch is a must-see while you're there. More than two million visitors come to see the painting every year.
Just a few minutes from the Rijksmuseum is the Van Gogh Museum, where you can see the Dutch artist's most famous works of art, including his sunflowers and self portraits.
During the second world war, the Netherlands was occupied by the Nazis, and this dark period is remembered at the Anne Frank House on Prinsengracht. Anne and her family were persecuted for being Jewish, and were forced to hide in the residence for more than two years during the Nazi occupation. Today, the house is a museum, and one of the most visited in Europe.
Beer-lovers should make a bee-line for the Heineken Experience while they are in Amsterdam. Based at Heineken's first brewery, the museum gives visitors a chance to learn about the company's history, the brewing process and how to pour the perfect pint.
While you are in the city, make sure you try the local cuisine. The Dutch make amazing pancakes and there are pancakes houses on virtually every street. You can buy all kinds of flavours and fillings, from the classic maple syrup to savoury style with bacon and eggs.
