The Chase's Mark Labbett admits he voted for Anne Hegerty to take on 'I'm A Celebrity' trial

The Chase’s Mark Labbett has admitted that he voted for Anne Hegerty to take on the Bushtucker Trail on last night’s I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here.

Fellow Chaser Anne sadly failed in the ‘Monstrous Monoliths’ challenge, earning only two stars and being covered in mealworms and green slime in the process.

And while some viewers took to Twitter to slam those who voted for her to take on the task, due to her seemingly fragile state on the show, Labbett said he did so for the right reasons.

“I voted for her to do this trial because I saw it was a logical and mental challenge. I thought, ‘yippee, she can do that’,” he told The Sun.

“She’ll be really good at it and be moved to a better campsite. It’s a positive vote. People voted for her because they want her to do well.

“They made a point of saying it was a mental trial beforehand. Although after the keys challenge in the first episode Anne was a bit shocked and stunned, she talked her way through it.”

It was a shaky first day in camp, during which Anne, who has Asperger’s, broke down and confided with other camp-mates that she wasn’t sure she’s be able to make it through the series.

But Labbett, known as The Beast on the ITV quiz show, reckons that she will stay the course and could even have a shot at winning.

“She won’t bottle it all up and then have a complete mega meltdown,” he added. “She will get it off her chest quite quickly, has a little cry and then gathers herself together.

“She has got a will of iron that lady, she’ll be fine.

“The joy of I’m a Celebrity is it’s not always obvious who’s going to win from the start. It will be someone who the public suddenly starts taking a shine to.

I’m hoping that this year it is Anne and the early signs are good.”

Indeed, bookies have now placed Anne, known as The Governess on the quiz show, as joint favourite to win with Inbetweeners actress Emily Atack.

It comes after news that Anne’s appearance on the show has sent ratings of The Chase through the roof.

Yesterday’s episode found an extra million viewers tuning in.
