The Chase star Paul Sinha has paid tribute to a contestant who passed away before his episode aired.

Pete Green died in a house fire in June in Norfolk, with his appearance on the ITV show broadcast on Monday (September 20).

Taking to his Twitter account, Sinha wrote: "Saddened to hear that Pete from today's Chase has since passed away in horrible circumstances.

"A true gentleman, a warm, engaging and thoroughly entertaining opponent."

Pete's son Ben also took to the comment section, revealing he had a great time on The Chase while also praising those who work on the show.

"Dad was so excited about the episode," he tweeted. "He talked about it daily up to the filming and then every week after.

"He had an amazing time and described the crew as the most wonderful warm people and yourself & Bradley as amazing characters he would have liked to have had a beer with! TY".

A resident of Pete's town also explained the love the locals had for the last contestant, revealing: "Pete was the Town Crier and lived about 500m from my house.

"It was a great shock to the local community. He had a great send off with a horse-drawn procession through the town centre, with his family and steampunk friends following."

During his stint on the show, Pete won £3,000 in the cash builder and took a minus offer of £5,000 against Sinha, making it to the final chase. However, alongside fellow contestant Jessica, he wasn't ultimately victorious, with only a second left on the clock.

The Chase airs weekdays at 5pm on ITV.
