The government has announced its annual rail sale will return this month, giving passengers the chance to buy their train tickets at heavily discounted prices. The sale starts tomorrow, January 14, and will end on Monday, January 20.

According to the Department for Transport, selected advance and off-peak fares will go on sale at up to 50% off for travel between 17 January and 31 March 2025. The discounts will apply to thousands of popular routes across almost all UK train operators, including Avanti West Coast, which operates the service between Liverpool Lime Street and London Euston.

If they book at the right time, passengers travelling from Liverpool could visit London for as little as £7. The government has warned that the offers "will not last long" as there are "only a limited number of tickets."

More than 600,000 tickets were sold in last year’s sale, resulting in an extra 440,000 journeys taken by train. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said: "I’m launching the biggest ever rail sale so more passengers can get big discounts on train tickets to visit destinations across the country.

"Whether you’re planning a getaway or wanting to visit friends or family, this sale offers huge reductions on all sorts of journeys. Make the most of this sale, get your tickets while you can!"

Anyone taking the Liverpool-London train on a Sunday should be aware of possible disruption on the route. Train managers on the route went on strike over the weekend in the first of a series of weekend strikes affecting the line.

The workers, members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT), will continue to strike every Sunday until May 25. Avanti urged its customers to travel on Saturday or Monday if possible, with a reduced timetable operating during the strikes.
