Cheapest dates to holiday this autumn can save up to £120 on flights expert says
With the peak season of travel coming to a close, savvy holidaymakers could get massive savings on certain flights and destinations. Travel expert Melanie Fish at Expedia analysed the top autumn destinations and holidays, revealing some options that could save over £100 on average.
Melanie shared: “Summer sun escapes are a firm fixture on Brits’ calendars, but shoulder season should be about spontaneity if you want to save hundreds of pounds on your trip. Other Autumn savings tips include booking two weeks out which can save on average £120.”
She highlighted seven specific days in September which has average ticket prices for flights nearly £100 cheaper than the seasonal average, and £50 cheaper than the summer average. For those that need a bit more notice on their getaways, she also revealed some December dates that could be beneficial: “The best flight deals are showing from 22 – 29 September and to avoid the hotel crowds, plan a break on 10 or 17 December.”

Expedia’s research found that booking a flight 14 to 20 days before you travel can save an average of £120 when compared to 91 days ahead of your flight, or £60 when compared to booking two to three months in advance. When it comes to accommodations though, the experts pinpoint November 3 to November 9 as the cheapest daily rates on average £15 less per night than summer averages.
On average, autumn holidays were found to be 15% cheaper than their summer counterparts. Research trends also showed Brits have a heightened interest in lesser-known European destinations this time of year too.
Based on hotel searches over the autumn season compared to last year, the fastest-growing attractions include Saint Malo in France, Didim in Turkey, Tromso in Norway, Poznan in Poland and Tangier in Morocco. Italy seemed to be a major hit with travellers as four cities made the list; Syracuse, Palermo, Brescia and Ischia while the only destination outside of Europe to make the list was Beijing in China.
