Cheapest place for petrol in Coventry as calls are made to stop retailers charging 'too much'

The cheapest place in Coventry to fill up your car with petrol is at a Sainsbury's garage in Earlsdon. According to the latest data supplied by retailers, a driver in an average family car could save up to £3.30 by filling up at this forecourt, compared to the most expensive petrol station.

The Sainsbury's garage at 330 Fletchamstead Highway, Earlsdon is charging motorists 145.9p per litre, which means it would cost £80.25 to fill up an average 55 litre tank. This is based on a feed of live petrol prices which was set up by the government's Competition and Markets Authority last September.

The RAC has written to Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho this week calling for “meaningful action” against fuel retailers charging too much for petrol and diesel.

It comes as the margins made by retailers have risen recently to 16p per litre for diesel and 11p per litre for petrol. The margins are around 8p a litre higher than five years ago because a drop in oil prices has led to a fall in the price of fuel on the wholesale market.

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: “We feel the current margins being charged by larger retailers in particular are extremely unfair on drivers struggling to get by in the cost-of-living crisis."

The average price for a litre of petrol across the Coventry region this week is 148.5p.
