Cheapest places for petrol and diesel in Merseyside this weekend

The cheapest place in Liverpool to fill up your car with petrol is at a Sainsbury's garage in West Derby. According to the latest data supplied by retailers, a driver in an average family car could save up to £3 by filling up at this forecourt, compared to the most expensive petrol station.

The Sainsbury's garage at 112 East Prescot Road, Sandfield Park is charging motorists 128.9p per litre, which means it would cost £71 to fill up an average 55 litre tank. This is based on a feed of live petrol prices which was set up by the government's Competition and Markets Authority last September.

The most expensive filling station in Liverpool is a Sainsbury's station at Great Homer Street, Everton West. The cost of standard petrol at this station is 134.9p, meaning it would cost a total of £74 to fill up an average family car at this forecourt.

For the owners of diesel cars, the cheapest place to fill up is the Sainsbury's garage at Sandfield Park. The cost of a litre of standard diesel at this forecourt was 135.9p, according to prices supplied by retailers. UK drivers are currently paying 135.9p per litre of petrol, while people who own diesel vehicles are forking out 141.7p on average. In Liverpool owners of petrol cars are currently being charged 2.7p less than the national average of 135.9p. Diesel car drivers in Liverpool are paying 3.5p less than the national average.

The cheapest place to buy petrol in the country is at a ASDA garage in Causeway Coast And Glens where a litre of standard petrol is 125.7p. The most expensive petrol station in the country is a ASDA garage in Malvern Hills where motorists are charged 169.9p a litre.

The prices quoted are for standard grade petrol (E10) and for standard grade diesel (B7). The figures are supplied by the major retailers under a voluntary scheme launched by the Competition and Markets Authority to ensure motorists are given a fair deal at the petrol pumps. Most of the major petrol retailers have signed up to the scheme and the petrol stations supplying up-to-date information account for around 60 per cent of the fuel sold in the UK. The price of fuel is often cheaper at Costco outlets, but their service is only available to members.
