New cheapest UK supermarket crowned out of Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons

The Grocer has crowned Asda as its cheapest supermarket for deals and discounts. Asda, which announced a major leadership shake-up this week, was £1.34 cheaper than runner-up Tesco and has been named the cheapest as retailers roll out the promotions.

Asda was £1.34 cheaper than runner-up Tesco at £66.56 and offered the lowest price for 18 items and was exclusively cheapest for eight. Tesco offered savings worth £7.55 (or 11.1%) to Clubcard holders and was the only retailer whose basket was cheaper than last year (–£1.29/1.9%). It was also £6.35 (9.4%) cheaper than last month.

The Grocer 33 is valued by the grocery retail industry as a vital, independent tool to measure supermarket pricing, supply chain effectiveness as well as in-store and online execution. The unique weekly combination of a price comparison survey with a nationwide mystery shopping survey provides.

The retail mag explains: "The Grocer with real-time insights into how Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, and Waitrose are performing, while regular guest retailer appearances from Aldi, Amazon, Iceland, Lidl and Ocado delivers additional tests.

"The weekly data we collect to calculate the grocer offering the cheapest prices and the best service and availability every week is also part of an annual competition. At the end of the 49-week period in which the surveys are conducted we award three Grocer Gold Awards based on totting up the respective scores over the course of the year, while the winners of the store of the week are also put forward for the annual Store Manager of the Year competition."

Morrisons was £2.95 more expensive than Asda at £69.51. Sainsbury’s was running eight promotions for Nectar members, resulting in a saving of £4.62. But it was £5.08 more expensive than Asda at £71.64 and was only exclusively cheapest for the mushrooms.

Waitrose was ranked most expensive.
