Coin collectors might be sitting on a fortune, with over three million new King Charles coins hitting circulation this year and some stashes potentially worth up to £63,000. UK Debt Expert has done the sums, analysing eBay sales data from the past six months to see British vintage coins' lucrative sales figures.

Topping the list is the 2020 Brexit 50p coin, inscribed with 'peace, prosperity, friendship with all nations', which nabbed over £60,000 in one sale and £25,500 in another, setting the bar with a minimum cash-in of £10,000.

This particular 50p piece, commemorating the UK's split from the EU, is a hot item for collectors. Not to be outdone, a rare King Charles £5 note released just this year fetched £2,800 a figure likely to soar as his time on the throne progresses.

For those cherishing their childhood collections, Queen Elizabeth's Golden Jubilee £5 coins from 2002 are fetching tidy sums, up to £5,000 each. And it's not just big-ticket items - even a humble 1970s penny could reel in an eye-watering £7,500.

Maxine McCreadie, UK Debt Expert's personal finance sage, advises, "As King Charles' new coins are issued across the UK, there's no better time to have a look at your own collection and see what can be turned into cash.", reports Wales Online.

"Some people may not realise what they might have if they were gifted a coin, such as millennials whose parents may have purchased a £5 coin for them in 2002. If you have any old coins from last year or 30 years ago, check online to get an idea of how much they have recently sold for, and make sure to mention any specific designs. When selling, ensure to include any authentication you have and a full description of the item."

There is an even rarer one with a different date.

"Whether you're looking to try and make a little extra money or simply intrigued by the potential value of your coins, it could be worth checking their value online."

The most valuable coins on the market.
