Storm Éowyn is expected to wreak havoc across the UK, with strong winds set to cause widespread disruption. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has now urged people to take steps to ensure their safety during the period of severe weather.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind and rain on Friday, January 24. Blustery weather from Eowyn - the fifth named storm of the season - will continue across the Midlands on Saturday.

Adrian Simpson, head of policy at RoSPA, said: “We urge everyone to take these precautions seriously to ensure their safety during Storm Éowyn. The expected conditions are severe, and it is crucial to stay informed and prepared. The public’s safety is RoSPA’s top priority.”

The RosPA's top safety tips for the storm include avoiding travel where possible, and driving cautiously, checking routes before setting out. At home, loose items - such as outdoor furniture and bins - should be secured, with families staying indoors as much as possible.

An emergency kit with essentials, such as water, first-aid kit, torch and batteries should also be prepared. If able to, the RosPA encouraged people to check in on elderly or vulnerable neighbours to ensure they were safe during the storm.

They also urged people to compile a list of emergency contact numbers, including local authorities and utility companies, should they be needed in an emergency.
