Netflix’s hit reality show Cheer has been a fan-favourite since it began in January 2020. The show follows the successes and shortcomings of the Navarro Junior College Bulldogs Cheer Team in Corsicana, Texas, and documents the incredibly competitive cheerleading world.

La’Darius Marshall has been a particular favourite amongst fans - not only for his cheerleading skills but also for his infectious personality on the show. But halfway through season 2, it seemed La’Darius made the decision to leave both the show and his cheerleading career behind.

Describing his exit at the beginning of episode 6, he said ‘I did my time. I've cheered with the best of them. I can't be killing my body anymore. I'm tired. My body is dead and burnt out.’ But alongside the physical toll that cheerleading has taken on his body, La’Darius also set the record straight about another, more personal reason for him leaving. Speaking about coach Monica Aldama and her temporary exit to compete in 2020’s Dancing With the Stars, he admitted that he didn’t get the support he needed from the coaching staff while she was gone. He also said of Monica: ‘When she came back from Dancing With the Stars, it was almost like she forgot where she came from.’ And according to Style Caster, La’Darius accused Monica and Navarro College of ‘physical and mental abuse’.

He has also recently posted an Instagram story, telling fans he is going to release a video explaining why he quit, saying he wants to ‘clear the air and tell the truth.’

And while fans are still calling for his return, La’Darius is sticking to his guns. Responding to one fan who wrote on Twitter: ‘If LaDarius doesn't come back there won't be a season 3 of #Cheer. These new kids don't have the charm the og crew did. Without LaDarius, Morgan and Jerry there is no show. Not even about that, also for the Cheerleading aspect I hope they bring on LaDarius!!’ La’Darius simply typed: ‘I won’t be back!’

Monica has since responded to these accusations, and according to Parade has said: 'I’ve been really hurt over this because I’ve gone above and beyond for this kid. I’ve done more for him than probably anyone at this program that’s ever come through because I was determined the boy was going to graduate.' She continues to say: 'He came to my family's house for Thanksgiving when he had nowhere to go. I paid his dorm deposit. I’ve literally done everything in the world for this kid. Never raised my voice at him. Yet you’re going to slander my name? I don’t get it. I take it very personally.'
