Chelmsford theatre hiring new director with salary up to £60k a year

Chelmsford Theatre is on the hunt for a new director in a role that comes with a salary worth up to £60,000. The advert for a permanent director comes more than two years after Chelmsford City Theatres appointed Lee Henderson who is currently Theatre Director.

It also follows a major refurbishment costing just under £3.25 million. Since reopening in January 2023, the theatre has seen a 40 per cent increase in programming — welcoming over 140,000 people in 2023/24.

Most recently touring shows such as Blood Brothers and Mousetrap, both of which sold out, have visited the theatre in Fairfield Road.

An advert said: “The successful applicant will continue to drive our wider programme which has expanded to include a diverse range of family, music, named artists, comedy, entertainment shows, creative engagement, and community activities across both our main house and studio, with more exciting partnerships opportunities on the horizon as well as keeping favourites such as our much-loved pantomime which remains a strategic focus, with attendance at over 90 per cent last year.

"The ideal candidate will maintain financial resilience and have exceptional attention to detail — crucial for steering operations and business management. This role requires a proactive approach to maintaining our box office performance, which has impressively doubled since 2019, and consistently operates at over 80 per cent average capacity.

"The theatre director will lead a team to continue the expansion of our secondary revenue streams and ensure we uphold a red-carpet customer experience."
