Chelsea have decided against pursuing a move for Crystal Palace star Michael Olise as they consider their options in the transfer market - but it does mean that a move for Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran could be brought more sharply into focus.

News emerged on Friday night that the Blues had had second thoughts about exploring a move for Olise from their London rivals Palace; having received permission to speak to the player directly from the Eagles, Chelsea have now chosen to abandon the deal, reports the Athletic. Frenchman Olise is now instead set to join Vincent Kompany at Bayern Munich for around £55m.

For Villa, the update could be significant. While the sale of Douglas Luiz to Juventus remains in the pipeline, the club need to ensure that they aren't at risk of breaching PSR rules before the official end of the season, next Sunday. Chelsea's decision to ditch the Olise transfer, coupled with the fact that they remain keen on adding attackers this summer, could lead progress being made in the case of Duran.

The Colombian only arrived at Villa 18 months ago from Chicago Fire and he enjoyed a strong end to the season during which Villa secured Champions League football; as well as his brace against Liverpool to secure Champions League football, Duran also netted in the win over Ajax and in the defeat at Manchester City.

The 20-year-old has struggled to displace Ollie Watkins at the fore of Villa's starting XI though. Only three of his 35 Premier League appearances have been from the off and he has dropped hints on social media in recent weeks that a move to Chelsea interests him. Villa, it's understood, would be open to selling Duran and making a significant profit on what they paid the Fire in January 2023.

Chelsea and Villa are expected to be at the table a fair amount this summer. A move the Blues defender Ian Maatsen, currently away with the Netherlands, is progressing, while Villa also have a longstanding interest in England midfielder and Stamford Bridge stand-in captain Conor Gallagher.
