Chelsea Clinton has rushed to the defence of Donald Trump's son Barron after a website criticised him for dressing too casually.

The former first daughter slammed the media on Monday for not letting the "first boy" lead a private childhood, following an article published by the Daily Caller bashing the 11-year-old's dress sense.

"It's high time the media & everyone leave Barron Trump alone & let him have the private childhood he deserves," she wrote along with the link to the article titled "It's High Time Barron Trump Starts Dressing Like He's In The White House."

The Daily Caller article, published on Monday, was written by Ford Springer who said he's been on the "Barron Trump train from the start," but then bashed the 11-year-old for not looking as smart as his famous parents.

"Barron looked like he was hopping on Air Force One for a trip to the movie theater."

Barron was travelling with his parents, President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, from New Jersey to Washington D.C.

Photos show the youngster sporting a red J.Crew T-shirt which bore the phrase "On your mark tiger shark" and beige shorts as he embarked Air Force One.

"What am I missing here? Is Barron just better than I ever was at rebelling against my parents?" Springer wrote.

"His dad is always looking dapper and his mom has become a worldwide fashion icon since becoming first lady.

"The youngest Trump doesn't have any responsibilities as the president's son but the least he could do is dress the part when he steps out in public."

It's not the first time Ms Clinton has come to Barron's defence.

In January, Barron Trump was the target of online trolls after a Saturday Night Live writer said he will turn into a "homeschool shooter".

Ms Clinton wrote on Facebook at the time: "Barron Trump deserves the chance every child does - to be a kid.

"Standing up for every kid also means opposing POTUS policies that hurt kids."
