Chelsea to complete £44m Daniele Rugani transfer as club hand defender five-year deal

Daniele Rugani is set to become Maurizio Sarri’s second major signing following the arrival of Jorginho last weekend.

The 23-year-old defender is set to be given a five-year contract worth £77,000-a-week when he moves from Juventus for a fee of around £44.2m.

His arrival will lead to more doubts over the future of captain Gary Cahill, who as Standard Sport revealed this week is considering leaving the club after six years.

The England defender wants to have talks with the new Chelsea coach when he returns from holiday and Sarri claims the 32-year-old is a part of his plans. He said: “In respect to Cahill he can still give us a lot.”

Meanwhile, the Blues have added Gianluigi Donnarumma to a three-man short-list including Kasper Schmeichel and Petr Cech as they seek a replacement for goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

Courtois is expected to join Real Madrid for £35.5million but the Blues will not allow him to leave until a replacement is found.
