The off-season means that players are now away on international duty or taking a well deserved break after another gruelling Premier League season.

Several Manchester City players are representing their countries over the next few weeks with nations undergoing their final preparations for Euro 2024 in Germany. The tournament kicks off on July 15.

Away from the playing staff, there will still be a lot of activity going on at Man City as preparations for the new season will be well underway. Some of that work will include identifying transfer targets and assessing the squad to decide on players’ future.

There have therefore been plenty of stories surrounding City over the last 24 hours. The Manchester Evening News have taken a look at a couple of the latest and added in our own perspective.

Former City man completes Chelsea move

Former City assistant manager Enzo Maresca has officially become the new head coach of Chelsea, just one year after leaving City.

The Italian coach was Pep Guardiola’s assistant for the treble-winning season before becoming manager of Leicester City last year. He led the Foxes to the Championship title as they earned promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

But he will now not be taking charge of Leicester against City next season, but will instead be in the dugout for Chelsea. He has signed a five-year deal at Stamford Bridge with the option for a further year.

MENSport says: It’s certainly one of the moves of the summer that wasn’t expected, but it was Maresca’s possession-based style, similar to that of Guardiola that is said to have attracted Chelsea. It will be interesting to see how he gets on at Stamford Bridge with the Blues having a hire them and fire them reputation - there is a debate on if he may have been better building up more experience at Leicester before making a big move.

At Leicester, he made the most of his connections at City with a loan deal for defender Callum Doyle. But City may be less willing to help him now he’s at Chelsea.

Striker outlines Man City ‘dream’

Brighton and Hove Albion striker Deniz Undav has outlined his dream to play for Manchester City before the end of his career. The 27-year-old has spent the season on loan with Bundesliga side Stuttgart after struggling for regular game time in his first season in the Premier League.

In the season just gone he scored an impressive 18 times in 30 appearances in the league while also providing a further 10 assists. He has now spoken about his future and has namechecked City as a destination he will work hard to reach.

“I think there are few players who would reject an offer from Bayern. Everyone wants to move to the really big clubs at some point: Man City, Real, Barcelona,” He told Bild. “That’s the last big step I want to take one day, and I give everything to achieve it every day.”

MENSport says: While his goalscoring record in the Bundesliga is impressive, Undav struggled in his one and only season in the Premier League so far. If he has any chance of catching Pep Guardiola’s attention over the next couple of years then he will need to return to Brighton and start smashing in the goals for fun.

The bad news for the striker is that time is against him. At 27 he should now be at his peak, meaning that the 2024/25 season will be crucial in him getting that ‘dream’ final move.
