Chelsea reached an agreement to sell Trevoh Chalobah to Nottingham Forest but the move was rejected by the player, it has been revealed.
The centre-back has been deemed surplus to requirements by Mauricio Pochettino but it seems he is determined to stay and fight for his place at Stamford Bridge.
Chalobah made 34 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea last term but has yet to feature in a competitive game for the Blues since Pochettino’s arrival.
The likes of Thiago Silva, Levi Colwill and Axel Disasi are both ahead of Chalobah in the pecking order so he may find it difficult to break into the starting XI.
At the age of 24, he still has plenty of potential and is admired by several Premier League clubs.
As reported by TEAMtalk, Tottenham Hotspur wanted to sign Chalobah on loan, but Chelsea rejected their deadline day approach.
Bayern Munich also attempted to sign the defender on loan, as Thomas Tuchel was keen on a reunion with him. The German club were unable to reach an agreement, though, as Chelsea preferred a permanent sale.
The club that actually agreed a deal with the Blues was Nottingham Forest, but Chalobah wasn’t willing to make the switch to the City Ground.
Chalobah rejected £25m Forest move
According to reputed transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Chalobah turned down the chance to make a late move to Nottingham Forest.
On Twitter, he wrote: “Nottingham Forest tried to sign Trevoh Chalobah with an important proposal to the player on Deadline Day.
“The agreement with Chelsea was done, permanent transfer for more than £25m.
“Chalobah appreciated the effort but rejected & decided to stay after Bayern deal collapsed.”
While Chalobah seems determined to fight for his place at Chelsea, the rejection will have come as a blow to Steve Cooper.
The manager was evidently keen to make improvements to his defence and Chalobah, arguably, would have been an upgrade on consistent Nottingham Forest starters like Scott McKenna, Joe Worrall and Wily Boly.
Ironically, the Tricky Trees trio managed to keep an impressive clean sheet against Chelsea on Saturday, as Cooper’s team picked up a vital three points at Stamford Bridge.
The manager will hope that his current options at the back will be enough to help Nottingham Forest avoid relegation for a second consecutive campaign.
