Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata told to overcome 'stupid' confidence issues by Antonio Conte

Antonio Conte has called on Alvaro Morata to overcome any "stupid" pyschological problems he may have in front of goal because everyone at Chelsea trusts him.

Morata has looked devoid of confidence in recent weeks, with Chelsea's top scorer this season failing to have netted a goal since scoring in the 2-0 Boxing Day win against Brighton at Stamford Bridge.

Morata is unable to play in Chelsea's next game, a trip to the Amex to take on Chris Hughton's side, after being sent off for two bookable offences against Norwich in midweek.

And Conte has urged the Spaniard to move on from his recent goal-scoring drought by re-focusing and re-discovering his confidence with the help of the Chelsea boss and Morata's team-mates.

"For the strikers, this situation can happen," Conte told reporters on Friday. "For Alvaro, this is the first season that he's been having a full season. Maybe, for him, this is the first time to face this type of problems.

"But he has to overcome this problem because this is a stupid problem, You have to work for the team and not lose confidence.

"The coach trusts him, the team-mates trust him, the clubs trust him, the fans trust him. I don't see a problem, but this is the first time Morata has faced this situation.

"Before, if you stay on the bench, you don't have this type of pressure. So now he has to learn to face this type of situation, move forward and go on. Everyone in Chelsea trusts him."

Morata's first yellow card during Chelsea's FA Cup third-round replay win against Norwich was for diving before he was then sent off for his angry reaction to the initial booking.

Conte admits Morata quickly realised his mistake, but called on the striker to keep himself in check in the future.

Conte added: "I think the player knows very well his mistake [against Norwich]. There was frustration for the first yellow card, because the player didn't deserve this yellow card.

"If the referee doesn't want to give the penalty, in this situation it's still not right to book him. But, at the same time, you must learn to control yourself.

"The second yellow card was for dissent. I agree with the player for the first yellow card, but I don't agree with the player for the second yellow card. He has to check himself in future."
