Romelu Lukaku will undergo last-minute tests before he is cleared to play in Chelsea’s Champions League tie with Juventus.

The £97.5million striker has not played since injuring his ankle against Malmo last month. He is back in training, but club medics do not want to rush his return.

If he does take part on Tuesday, it will only be from the bench.

Thomas Tuchel said ahead of the clash: “We are not sure yet. We have one more training session. Yesterday he was in team training and seemed okay. Let’s see about the reaction [of the injury].

“He has [on Monday afternoon] an appointment with the doctors and physios to see about his reaction, to see about our next training session.

“Maybe we have the chance to bring back players to the squad, so maybe he has the chance to be in the squad for the last minutes, but that will be the absolute maximum we can get out of the situation right now.”

Jorginho has been cleared to play after limping out of Saturday’s win against Leicester, but Kai Havertz will also face late checks after complaining of tight hamstrings.

Tuchel added: “We took him off and we have some doubts with him. We need to check to see if he can train without any problems. This is more or less the question-mark.”

Timo Werner is in contention to start, along with Christian Pulisic, who scored in the 3-0 win at the King Power Stadium.

Chelsea need a point against Juve to secure qualification to the last-16. Defeat would leave them needing to get a draw in their final Group H game against Zenit Saint Petersburg in Russia.

Tuchel said: “First and foremost we do what we do. When we play football games we try to win them. This is what we do and this will not change.

“Okay, later in the game if the score is a draw we will maybe not allow Edouard Mendy to go into the opponent's box when we have a late corner, because we will not risk our qualification and go all-in.

“But until this moment we will try everything to win the game and to have a chance to do that. We have to win the game.”
