Chelsea tipped to rival Liverpool for Newcastle star Anthony Gordon after PSR saga

Newcastle United fans were rocked by the news last weekend that their star man Anthony Gordon had been offered to Premier League rivals Liverpool in a move designed to ease their Profit and Sustainability Rules concerns.

Chronicle Live understands Liverpool were approached with a proposal that was not right for the club. The Daily Mail reported that the proposed deal included defender Jarell Quansah, who Liverpool do not want to lose, and this has been confirmed.

Newcastle, like all Premier League clubs, are allowed to make losses of up to £105m over a rolling three-year period and last Sunday, June 20, signalled the end of the last profit and sustainability cycle.

The Magpies were scrambling to trade players to ensure they didn't fall foul of the rules and, thankfully, the sales of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson, as well as the compensation fee agreed for former sporting director Dan Ashworth to join Manchester United, saw them bridge that gap.

And while Newcastle were relieved not to sell any of their key players, the fallout of the Gordon saga will need to be managed carefully. United will not want to sell a player who was named their Player of the Season last term but reports earlier this week suggested Gordon's head had been turned by Liverpool's interest.

It remains to be seen whether the Reds will return with fresh interest in Gordon but the bookmakers are tipping them to sign Gordon before the transfer deadline.

BetVictor are offering odds of just 5/4 for Gordon to make the move to Anfield, while they also have given Chelsea, who tried to sign the England international two years ago, odds of just 4/1 to make a move for him this summer.

Interestingly, a move to any German club is priced at 6/1, while moves to clubs in Spain, Italy or France can all be backed at 12/1. Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester United are all priced at 16/1, while Man City have been handed an outside price of 20/1.

Gordon, who registered 12 goals and 11 assists for Newcastle last season, is currently part of England's squad at EURO 2024.
