Chelsea transfer news and targets: What we know about Maurizio Sarri’s summer plans

New coach Maurizio Sarri has already made a positive impact at Stamford Bridge, his presence persuading Jorginho to join the club.

Manchester City were favourites to sign the Italy international but that changed once the coach who inspired him at Napoli switched to west London.

He is exactly the kind of younger playmaker they need given Cesc Fabregas is entering the final year of his contract.

Confirmation of Sarri’s appointment means Chelsea can now push for his targets, such as Russia and CSKA Moscow midfielder Aleksandr Golovin, who impressed at the World Cup.

Negotiations with Juventus for Italy centre-half Daniele Rugani are going well. His career has not progressed as he would like in Turin and like Jorginho, he has fond memories of working with Sarri at a former club, in this case Empoli.

The Blues might not stop there in their pursuit of centre-backs, especially as there is a possibility that veterans David Luiz and Gary Cahill could both leave.

One of the players the hierarchy admire is Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles, although should manager Rafael Benitez remain in charge at St James’ Park as now looks likely, Chelsea’s chances of prising him away may have diminished.

Sarri also wants Gonzalo Higuain, and if Chelsea meet Juventus’ asking price of £53million for the 30-year-old, it would suggest Sarri has more influence on transfers than Antonio Conte ever did.

Chelsea have made an inquiry for Roma keeper Alisson in case Thibaut Courtois leaves.

Courtois has just one year left on his contract and if he doesn’t agree to an extension before August 9, then Chelsea may feel they have no option but to sell and sign a replacement.

The Blues are determined to hang on to Eden Hazard, despite Real Madrid’s interest , and at this stage they are relaxed about the situation, as the Belgian is under contract until 2020. They retain an interest in Bayer Leverkusen forward Leon Bailey - a possible replacement for Willian, who is wanted by Barcelona. The Catalan giants have made a £53m offer for the Brazilian.
